Departament of Petroleum Engineering

The AGH Department of Petroleum Engineering is an interdisciplinary research team focused on the exploitation of fluid resources, groundwater management, and the use of geological structures in the context of environmental and technological challenges. We combine geology, geophysics, reservoir engineering, and digital modeling to develop solutions that support the efficient and responsible use of natural resources. Our activities integrate technical expertise with industrial practice, contributing to sustainable development.

The Department of Petroleum Engineering traces its origins to the Department of Oil Mining, established in 1952 at the AGH Faculty of Mining. In its current form, it has been operating since 2007 within the structure of the Faculty of Drilling, Oil and Gas.

We conduct research that integrates Earth sciences with reservoir engineering and digital modeling. Our teams specialize in analyzing processes occurring within the rock mass, the exploitation of fluid resources—including groundwater—geological space management, and the development of technologies that support the sustainable use of subsurface resources and geological structures.

Our teaching combines an engineering approach with Earth sciences, chemical technology, and applied computer science. Students develop competencies in reservoir data analysis, numerical modeling, and assessing the technical and economic feasibility of natural resource development. The curriculum covers a wide range of topics—from hydrogeology to energy storage installations. We emphasize interdisciplinary preparation for careers in the resource and environmental sectors.

We support industry by implementing geoengineering solutions developed through our research and development activities. We carry out projects related to reservoir development, environmental risk assessment, groundwater studies, geophysics, and the use of subsurface space. We collaborate with companies and institutions in Poland and abroad, providing expert and implementation support.
